Happy July and Happy National Ice Cream Month from all of us at Amundson Dental! In today’s blog, we’re going to highlight all the wonderful things about ice cream while also going over the dental risk factors.
Ice cream is an easy go to treat during the summer months. Not only is it cold, it’s also sweet and refreshing, which is amazing after a hot summer day. We can attest to how great ice cream is! Some of our favorite flavors include vanilla, Cherry Garcia, and cookie dough. Yum!
Although ice cream is a tasty treat, it can come with risks to your dental health. Specifically, the high sugar content and carbohydrate amount feeds oral bacteria and increases your risk of cavities. We recommend eating ice cream in moderation and limiting other high carbohydrate sources. Also, we encourage swishing water after enjoying ice cream to help remove any excess sugar on your teeth.
For patients looking for an alternative to ice cream, we recommend low sugar sports drinks, fruit, or stevia/monk fruit. All are tasty options which can provide a healthier alternative for your teeth. And if you happen to own a Ninja Creami, we recommend making some homemade ice cream as you can control what goes in it!
We hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far! If you need to schedule a visit before summer ends, contact Amundson Dental today.
