Amundson Dental Associates’ Ultimate Flossing Guide

Flossing should be an essential part of everyone’s dental routine, yet it's often overlooked. Understanding the proper steps and techniques can make a significant difference in your dental hygiene. To floss correctly, use about 18 inches of floss, wrapping most around a middle finger and a clean section around the other. Gently slide the floss between your teeth, then curve it into a "C" shape against the side of each tooth and below the gumline, moving it up and down to scrape away plaque. Use a clean section for each tooth to avoid spreading bacteria.

Flossing is crucial because it cleans the space between your teeth where brushing alone cannot reach. There are various flossing tools available, like floss picks, threaders, and water piks. Choosing the right one depends on your physical dexterity and personal preference. But it’s recommended to floss at least once daily to maintain healthy gums and teeth.

If you are new to flossing make sure you follow the curve of the tooth down until you feel resistance, but be careful to not cut yourself.  This is vital for effective cleaning. We see many patients miss this area. For those who struggle to floss daily, integrating it into an existing routine can help, such as during a shower or watching television before bed. If you are struggling to add flossing into your routine, start small.

And if you have any questions on how to properly floss or what is best for you, make sure to ask us for help at your next appointment. We hope to see you soon and have a Happy Halloween!
